Packing your hospital bag is one of those tasks that feels overwhelming until you have a clear list in front of you. Pack too little and you’ll be sending your partner out at 2AM. Pack too much and you’ll spend half your labour trip hauling bags. This guide has you covered.
When should you pack your hospital bag? Most doctors recommend having your bag ready by Week 35–36 of pregnancy. Babies don’t always follow schedules, and you want to be prepared.
For Mum: What to Pack
During Labour
- Birth plan (2–3 printed copies)
- Insurance card and hospital paperwork
- ID / passport
- Phone charger (extra long cable is a lifesaver)
- Lip balm (breathing during labour dries your lips fast)
- Hair ties and headband
- Comfortable socks with grip soles
- Light snacks for early labour: energy bars, crackers, dried fruit
- Water bottle with a straw
- Music playlist or white noise app downloaded offline
- Pillow from home (hospitals pillows are notoriously flat)
Postpartum Stay (2–4 Days)
- Comfortable, loose nightgowns or pyjamas (2–3 sets) — front-opening if breastfeeding
- Nursing bras (2–3) even if you’re unsure about breastfeeding
- Disposable or dark-coloured underwear (5–6 pairs)
- Maternity pads — bring more than you think you need
- Toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, moisturiser
- Warm, non-slip slippers or flip-flops for the shower
- Going-home outfit (think: 6-month pregnancy size, not pre-pregnancy)
- Glasses if you wear contacts
- Earphones
- Snacks you love — hospital food timing is unpredictable
For Baby: What to Pack
- 2–3 newborn onesies (hospitals provide basics but yours will feel more like home)
- 1–2 sleepsuits / footed pyjamas
- Newborn hat (hospitals usually provide one, but bring a backup)
- Mittens to prevent scratching
- Swaddle blankets (2)
- Going-home outfit — something with snap buttons, not pullover
- Car seat — installed and checked before you leave home
- Nappies/diapers (hospitals provide, but having your own preferred brand doesn’t hurt)
For Your Birth Partner
- Change of clothes (labour can be long)
- Snacks and drinks
- Phone charger
- Cash for parking and vending machines
- Camera or fully charged phone
- List of people to contact after birth (you’ll be too exhausted to remember)
- Pillow and light blanket if the hospital allows staying overnight
What to Leave at Home
- Expensive jewellery
- Too many clothes for baby — newborns spend most of the first days in hospital-provided blankets
- Heavy books (you won’t read them)
- Your entire skincare routine — pick 3–4 essentials only
- Anything irreplaceable — hospital rooms have lots of foot traffic
Pro Tips from Real Parents
- Pack snacks you genuinely love. You may be in hospital for 2–4 days and the food won’t always match your cravings.
- Bring a long phone charger. Outlets are rarely next to the bed.
- Pre-install your car seat before 36 weeks. You do NOT want to figure that out the night you go into labour.
- Put everything in labelled zip-lock bags. It makes finding things at 3AM much easier.
- Keep one bag by the door from Week 36 onwards.
Every birth is different — but being prepared means you can focus on the moment that matters most. Pack this list, double-check it at 36 weeks, and you’ll walk into that hospital feeling ready.
